Who created the European Championship of Nations?

In the mid-50s football was already consolidated as a universal sport and international competitions began to create. The success of the World Cup and the COPA America made Henry Delaunay devise a tournament that measured the best European countries.

The president of the French federation got UEFA to approve his project in 1957. Thus, the first European Cup of European teams began celebrating on September 28, 1958.

Before EURO 2020, 15 Euro Cups have been played to date. France and Italy have been the only countries that have hosted the event twice.

EURO CUP 1960 FRANCE:

After a qualifying phase of almost 2 years, the first Final Phase of the European Cup of Nations was held in France from July 6 to 10, 1960. France, Yugoslavia, USSR and Czechoslovakia deputy 2 parties in Paris that ended with the Soviets as the first champion. EURO CUP 1964 SPAIN:

EURO CUP 1968 ITALY:

Italy played host in 1968 and raised the title of champion. The hosts had everything on their face and won the only Euro Cup in their history in the replay against Yugoslavia.

EURO 1972 BELGIUM:

The final phase was extending to 8 participants and Federal Germany was a deserved champion. “Torpedo Muller” led the Teutons who were preparing the 1974 World Cup assault they would win in their country.

The Germans came back to the final in Yugoslavia 76 but this time, they lost the final in the penalty shootout. Czechoslovakia won its first trophy with the decisive launch of Antonin Panenka in the last throw.

The new German generation, led by Bern Schuster, was proclaimed champion in the 1980 Eurocup. Two Hrubesch goals gave the Germans a win against Belgium in the final.

EURO CUP 1984 FRANCE:

The Euro cup returned to its origins to consecrate as champion the first great generation of the French national team. Michel Platini was the star of the tournament by scoring 9 goals in 5 games, including that famous error of Arconada in the Paris final.

EURO CUP 1988 GERMANY:

The Netherlands reconciled with its bad luck in the finals and lifted its first international trophy with an unforgettable generation. The tulips defeated the USSR 2-0 in a finale that will be remembered for the Van Basten volley that surpassed Dassaev.

European Championship CUP 1992 SWEDEN:

Denmark had not even qualified for the event but participated at the last minute to replace Yugoslavia. The Nordics gave the surprise and won 2-0 to Germany in the final.

EURO CUP 1996 ENGLAND:

The tournament was extended to 16 teams in England, where the gold goal was also established. Germany took advantage of the new rule and Bierhoff scored the final goal against the Czech Republic in the final. The Teutons lifted their third champion trophy.

EURO CUP 2000 BELGIUM / NETHERLANDS:

For the first time, the European Championship was held in two different countries. France arrived as a world champion and took advantage of the magic of Zidane and the luck of the champion to prevail in Italy in the final. A Golden goal from Trezeguet gave the second title of its history.

EURO CUP 2004 PORTUGAL:

The Portuguese Gold Generation had everything in favor to lift the first absolute international title in its history. The Lusos reached the final against the surprising Greece, which took the Eurocup with a header from Charisteas to the astonishment of all of Europe.

EURO CUP 2008 AUSTRIA / SWITZERLAND:

Tiki Taka Spain germinated in Austria where it won the tournament brilliantly thanks to the best generation in its history. The goal of Fernando Torres in the final against Germany changed the history of the Spanish team forever.

EURO CUP 2012 UKRAINE / POLAND:

Four years later, Spain arrived as World Champion and main favorite according to Uefa Euro odds , they demonstrated its superiority over all rivals. The Red won 4-0 in the final against Italy, in the biggest win in the history of the finals.

EURO CUP 2016 FRANCE:

The tournament was replayed in France for the third time in history with another expansion of participants. 24 teams played a close tournament that won against Portugal. European Championship CUP 2020:

UEFA wanted to innovate on the 60th anniversary of the tournament and for the first time in history, the European Championship would be held in several European cities. Those cities include Munich, Baku, St. Petersburg, Rome, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Glasgow, and London will host a tournament whose final will be held at Wembley Stadium.
